Resources for High School & College Students

Youth Programs

There are a number of programs available to young immigrants and the children of immigrants in Rhode Island. The Alliance of Rhode Island Southeast Asians for Education (ARISE) offers weekly after-school programs at Classical High School, Central High School, and Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School. These programs empower youth to advocate for their communities and prepare them for academic and career success. ARISE also offers courses for high school and college credit and summer programs.

Progreso Latino sponsors more more youth programs in Central Falls. These programs focus on volunteering, being substance-free, building healthy relationships, art, public speaking, and more. These programs take place at local schools and Progreso Latino’s office.

The Providence Student Union is a youth-led organization dedicated to helping students improve their schools and well-being. They host events on topics such as financial literacy, being undocumented, and healthy relationships.

The Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) hosts Organizing Circle, a program that gives Southeast Asian youth the skills and mentorship to transform their communities.

College Preparation

College Visions is a program for underprivileged students and students whose parents do not have a U.S. college degree. The program helps students apply to and succeed in college.

ARISE offers an SAT prep course for Southeast Asian and low-income students.

Unfair Treatment at School

Students who feel they have faced unfair suspension, in-school harassment, discrimination, or problems outside of school can contact the Providence Student Union’s support line at (401) 543-2447.

Emergency Funds

Students with urgent needs can anonymously apply for funds from the Providence Student Union to cover family utility bills, reproductive healthcare, college acceptance fees, bus passes, and more.

Scholarships

The Tam Tran Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for undocumented and DACA high school students in Rhode Island who plan to attend college. The Fund also provides grants for these students who currently attend college in Rhode Island. More information, as well as the application, can be accessed here.

In-State Tuition

Rhode Island students can qualify for in-state tuition even if they are undocumented. For a complete list of requirements for undocumented students, check out the Coalition of Advocates for Student Opportunity’s summary of the in-state tuition policy. CASO also publishes information here about the cost of attending colleges in Rhode Island.
